A listing of the top cool culinary jobs and cool culinary careers in the world, some you've never heard of, some obscure, and many of them unique and out of the ordinary.
Do you wander through the wine aisles at the grocery store curious about the difference between Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot? Do you look at the wine list at your favorite restaurant and wonder which bottle will taste best with your steak?
Sommeliers are wine pros that have the answers to all those questions and many more. Working in high-end restaurants, being a sommelier involves much more than sipping and swirling the best vintages.
Anyone with a love and deep knowledge of wine can grab a job as a sommelier or wine waiter, but the best positions go to a select few certified and master sommeliers. Certified Sommeliers must pass an exam covering wine theory, tasting and serving. Master Sommeliers undergo even more rigorous testing on wine service and sales, wine production and grape varieties. The qualifications are so extreme that there are only 200 Master Sommeliers in the world.
With a certification in hand, sommeliers are ready to work in the world's best eateries where they spend their days developing wine lists, procuring wine, recommending pairings and, of course, sampling a bit to ensure it's worth serving.
